The story

Hathni Kund, near the town of Yamuna Nagar in Haryana, is where the Western Yamuna Canal begins, on a raised plinth looking over the Yamuna River just after it leaves the last Himalayan foothills at Paonta Sahib. The canal's water was once collected at the Tajewala Barrage, 5 km away, but the newer Hathni Kund Barrage has taken over that role.

The spot is popular with visitors, offering a restaurant along with rafting, body surfing and camping; the nearby rapids are of medium intensity. It lies close to Kalesar National Park, about 5,100 hectares of sal forest, the only such tract in Haryana, with flowering trees such as dhak, kachnar and amaltas. Rufous treepies, drongos, hornbills, peafowl and partridges are found locally, along with nilgai, barking deer, monkeys, jackals and the odd chital. The old barrage at Tajewala is a well-liked angling spot.
