Gyangong Ani Gompa, also known as Jangchub Choeling, is a nunnery on a hillside near Tawang, reached by a path lined with tall pines and looking over green valleys, the Tawang River and snowy peaks. Its origin is credited to Merag Lama Lodroe Gyatso, founder of Tawang Monastery, who made a meditation cave here for his sister because women could not join the monastery. As more nuns came, the cave grew into a full nunnery; its founding year is not known, and Tawang Monastery still runs and supplies it.
The buildings follow Tibetan Buddhist style, with local stone walls, wooden roof supports and flat roofs that shed snow. The main prayer hall holds paintings of the Buddha, and stupas, chortens, prayer wheels and mandala murals surround the complex.
