The story

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib stands at about 12,000 feet on the Leh–Kargil road and honours Guru Nanak Dev, founder of Sikhism. It is built around a boulder found in the late 1970s while the Leh–Nimu road was being laid; workers could not shift it, and it is believed to carry the Guru's imprint. Legend says that in 1517 Guru Nanak stopped near Leh, where a demon threw the rock at him, but it turned soft as wax and later held the print of the demon's foot.

The Indian Army and local people built the gurdwara around the stone, which local lamas also venerate. Inside are murals on Sikh history and the Guru Granth Sahib. Free langar is served to everyone, Army officers volunteer every Sunday, and Guru Nanak's birthday draws pilgrims in November.
