01 — The story

The story

Magnetic Hill lies on the Leh–Kargil highway, ringed by Himalayan peaks with the Sindhu River on its eastern side. On a marked section of the road, a vehicle left in neutral seems to roll uphill as if drawn by an unseen force. The effect is an optical illusion produced by the lie of the surrounding land, though many people believe the hill holds a magnetic field.

Local folklore says a road to heaven once ran here and that only those worthy of heaven could feel the pull; other tales speak of an ancient civilisation that mastered magnetism. The hill gives wide views over mountains and valleys. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Sangam Point where the Indus and Zanskar meet, and the Army's Hall of Fame museum lie in the wider area.
