The story

Gurdwara Naulakha Sahib stands in Naulakha village, Fatehgarh Sahib district, on the Patiala–Sirhind road, roughly 13 km from Sirhind and 19 km from Patiala. It marks a stay of a day and a night by Guru Tegh Bahadur and Mata Gujri during a journey through the Malwa region.

The village's name comes from that visit. Lakhi Shah Wanjara, who had lost his ox, vowed an offering to the Guru if it was found; recovering it in the jungle, he brought nine takas, which the Guru passed to the sangat without touching. Thinking the Guru displeased, Wanjara apologised that he could not give more. The Guru answered that his nine takas were worth nine lakh, and later, blessing the people who came to see him, asked that the village be called Naulakha, 'nine lakh'.
