The story

Gugamal National Park was set up on 22 February 1974 and is one of seven protected areas making up the Melghat Tiger Reserve, covering parts of Chikhaldara and Dharni tehsils in Amravati district. The hilly terrain is covered in southern dry tropical deciduous forest dominated by teak, ain, Indian gooseberry and kusum, with bamboo widespread and orchids and strobilanthes on the higher slopes. The forest is also rich in medicinal plants.

Mammals include the Bengal tiger, leopard, sloth bear, dhole, gaur, sambar, nilgai, barking deer, four-horned antelope, honey badger and flying squirrel. The streams hold about 25 kinds of fish and the forest many butterflies. Crocodiles were reintroduced in 1990 and 1991 at Siddu Kund on the Gadga near Dhakna and at Hathikund on the Dolar.
