01 — The story

The story

Melghat Tiger Reserve covers a stretch of the Satpura range in Amravati district and is among the first nine reserves created under Project Tiger. It protects more than 1,000 kinds of plants along with Bengal tigers, whose numbers have risen thanks to anti-poaching work, habitat repair and the involvement of local people. Gugamal National Park and the Dhakna-Kolkaz Wildlife Sanctuary lie within its area.

The landscape is one of thick forest, gorges, hills, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, with tribal communities who have long lived inside it. Safaris, including night drives, look for tigers, leopards, sloth bears and wild dogs, while guided walks bring sightings of birds such as the Malabar pied hornbill and the crested serpent eagle. Treks and camping are possible in Dhakna-Kolkaz, Semadoh is a quiet base, and Narnala Fort gives views over the forest. Local markets sell tribal crafts, honey and spices.
