The story

Gopal Mandir, also known as the Dwarkadhish temple, stands in the main market of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, 65 km from Indore. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna and ranks as the second largest temple in the city after Mahakaleshwar. Bayaji Bai Shinde, wife of Daulatrao Scindia, had it built in the 19th century in the Maratha style.

The main image is a two-foot statue of Krishna of silver-coated marble, joined by idols of Shiva, Parvati and Garuda. Janmashtami is celebrated here with great pomp, as is Harihar Parva, when images of the Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga are brought to meet Krishna. Mahmud of Ghazni is said to have stolen the temple doors, which Mahadji Scindia later restored.
