The story

Gnanaparameswarar Temple is a Shiva temple in the village of Tirucherai, roughly 4 km from Kudavasal on its northern side and 14 km south of Kumbakonam. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the shrines sung in the Tevaram, and both Appar and Campantar praised its deity.

Shiva is worshipped here as Gnanaparameswarar, also called Saraparameswarar, and the goddess as Gnanambikai or Gnanavalli. The sage Markandeya, the river goddess Kaveri and the sage Dowmya are said to have worshipped at the shrine. The main festivals are Tiruvathirai in Margazhi (December–January), Maha Sivaratri in Masi (February–March) and Annabishegam in Aippasi (October–November).
