The Giant Buddha of Tawang is a gilded bronze figure standing almost 30 feet high on a small hill close to Tawang Monastery. It was placed so that it looks out over the Tawang Chu valleys, the surrounding snow peaks and the rivers below, with green slopes all around.
The statue is a recent addition to the town, consecrated by H.E. Thegtse Rinpoche in 2015. Even so, devotees and pilgrims come here for blessings, and its nearness to the monastery ties the two sites together. It is meant as a reminder of central Buddhist ideas, among them wisdom, care for others and non-violence.
