The story

Gandhi Smriti occupies the old Birla House on Tees January Marg, not far from Connaught Place. Ghanshyamdas Birla built the twelve-bedroom house in 1928, and Gandhi stayed here from 9 September 1947 until 30 January 1948, when he was shot dead in the grounds during his evening prayer meeting. The government bought the house from KK Birla in 1971 and opened it to the public on 15 August 1973 under its present name.

Visitors can walk through the house and garden, see the room Gandhi used, preserved as he left it, and stand at the spot where he was shot, now marked by the Martyr's Column. The Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum, added in 2005, and displays of objects from his life fill the building. The museum is closed on Mondays and national holidays, and entry is free.
