Gandhi Hill, once called ORR Hill, rises about 500 feet behind Vijayawada railway station in the Tarapet area. Its Gandhi Memorial is said to be the first in India built with seven stupas, and the hill is treated as a monument to the independence struggle.
A 52-foot stupa was unveiled here on 6 October 1968 by President Zakir Hussain. Visitors find a stone slab carved with quotations from Gandhi, a library and a planetarium, and a show about his life is staged at the memorial.
