The story

This temple to Sant Gajanan Maharaj, the saint who lived and died at Shegaon, stands in Paliwal Nagar, Indore. It began in 1988, when Mr Paliwal gave 13,000 sq ft of land and a bhumi pujan was held on Basant Panchami. Two rooms came first, one holding a large photograph of the saint for worship. The Thursday Maha Prasad started in 1992, the same year the saint's statue was installed on Prakat Diwas, and the temple was finished in 1994.

Built of Dholipuri stone and marble, it rises over three levels: a basement, the main hall and an upper floor for reading the saint's pothi, meant to stand for the paths of yoga, devotion and action. The sanctum is octagonal, a shape tied to the eight siddhis, and the main marble idol is about 5 ft tall. Thursday satsang and Maha Prasad draw devotees from the city and beyond.
