The story

Gadisar Lake is an artificial lake in the south of Jaisalmer, about 1.5 kilometres from the fort. Rawal Jaisal Bhati, who founded the city, built it in 1156, when it was called Jaisalasar and was the only source of water for the whole region. Around 1367 his successor Rawal Gadsi Bhati rebuilt it, and it took his name: Gadisar, the lake of Gadsi, from the Sanskrit sar for lake.

The lake is said to have once supplied the entire city with water. Today many chhatris stand around it, together with small shrines to a number of Hindu gods and goddesses.
