01 — The story

The story

Fort Naroa stood at the eastern tip of Divar island, one of the islands near Old Goa, the former capital. The Deccan sultanates first set it up as a military camp in the 1500s; after the Portuguese captured it, they rebuilt and strengthened it to guard the eastern frontier against the Bijapur Sultanate. Once the Novas Conquistas were added to Goa, it lost its purpose and was abandoned by 1834.

All that survives is a stretch of wall about 10–12 metres long and 6 metres high, with a semicircular projection that looks towards a window of the church over the road, possibly once a balcony for one person. The church is said to have been built in 1710 by Diogo da Silveira, who commanded the fort. Today people call it the Holy Spirit Church of Naroa, though an image of St Thomas the Apostle holds the centre of its main altar.
