The story

Dr. Ambedkar Manimandapam honours B. R. Ambedkar, chief architect of the Indian Constitution. It stands on Greenways Road in Mandhavelipakkam, by the Adyar estuary in Chennai's Adyar area. The Tamil Nadu government proposed a memorial and auditorium here in 1993, and J. Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone that April, but environmental groups took the plan to court. A 1994 ruling allowed only a memorial on part of the site, with no auditorium.

After further litigation the Public Works Department took up the work in 1999, and M. Karunanidhi opened the memorial on 10 June 2000. The building covers 0.75 acres, with the rest of the plot kept as lawns and landscaping. Its semicircular dome measures 55 ft across. Inside, around a dozen photographs trace Ambedkar's public life, including one with Periyar E. V. Ramasamy and others from the First Round Table Conference in London.
