01 — The story

The story

Devgad Fort, also called Janjira Devgad, lies 5 km from the town of Devgad, Sindhudurg district, and is one of the district's important forts. The sea surrounds it on three sides, and only the south joins the land. It was built by Dattajirao Angre in 1729 and was long held by Kanhoji Angre. Walter Brown of the East India Company tried to take it with the help of the Sawants of Wadi but suffered heavy losses, and after the fall of the Maratha empire a detachment of British rifles under Colonel Imlack captured it in April 1818.

A lighthouse stands on one side of the fort. Within the walls stand a Ganesh temple and three cannons, and the bastions remain sound.
