01 — The story

The story

The Ganapati temple at Redi stands in the small village of Redi in Maharashtra, about 30 km from Vengurla. The area has iron ore mines, and the temple's Ganesha idol came to light in 1976 in a mine close to Rewati port. The story goes that a local man, Sadashiv Kambli, saw a buried statue of Ganesha in a dream and persuaded workers to dig it out of the seashore; the idol is claimed to have been made by the Pandavas.

The seated figure is about 6 ft high and 4 ft wide, and it is unusual in having only two arms, where most Ganesha idols have four. Two months after the find, further digging brought up an idol of his mount, the mouse.
