The story

Daan-Ghati is one of the two chief temple structures in Govardhan, near Mathura; the other is known as Dasvisa. Over the years Daan-Ghati has gradually become the main temple of the town.

It plays a part in the Govardhan Puja, a 21 km circumambulation of Govardhan hill, which Krishna is believed to have raised on his little finger to shield his devotees from the anger of Indra, the Vedic god of rain. As the town's importance for visitors has grown, so has commerce around the temple, and these interests at times clash with worship. A management committee set up by Shri Gopal Prasad Kaushik, a prominent local citizen, in the 1970s began reforms in how the temple is run.
