The story

CSI Mateer Memorial Cathedral is a Protestant church in Thiruvananthapuram. The London Missionary Society opened it on 1 December 1906 as a memorial to Rev. Samuel Mateer. It became part of the Church of South India when that church was formed in 1947. The building follows the Hallenkirche, or hall church, plan: it is of granite, with Gothic arches carrying the roof and a square bell tower over a vestibule. The cut-stone Celtic cross on the tower recalls Mateer's Irish roots.

Mateer, born near Boardmills in County Down, worked to build an indigenous church, training local people for the ministry and handing them responsibility. Over his 33 years the congregations grew from 25 to 56 and the number of Christians from 3,000 to 10,060. His books on Travancore include The Land of Charity and Native Life in Travancore. He died in Hastings in 1893. Today the church has choirs singing in Malayalam, English and Tamil.
