01 — The story

The story

CSI Garrison Wesley Church stands in the Lal Bazar civilian area of Secunderabad Cantonment, at Trimulgherry, near the military engineering college MCEME. Military troops laid its cornerstone in 1853, which puts it among the oldest churches in Secunderabad. Wesleyan Methodist in origin, it now uses the liturgy of the Church of South India under the Diocese of Medak, and worshippers include visitors from nearby Army and Air Force stations.

By 2013 the rafters were showing their age, and members chose restoration over building anew, raising about Rs 1 crore for the work. The restored church was rededicated on 21 December 2014, with a procession through Lal Bazar, and in 2015 INTACH gave it one of six Heritage Awards. Sunday Mass continues, alongside annual programmes for Good Friday, Easter and Christmas.
