The story

The Cochin Port Maritime Heritage Museum stands on Willingdon Island in Kochi. It occupies the former quarters of the chief engineer from the years when the island was being created, and the Cochin Port Trust turned the building into a museum in May 2014.

Its photographs cover the port's story from 1920 to 1941, when Sir Robert Bristow and his workers built it with scant funds and without technical support. Images show the building of the Mattancherry bridge and wharves, the Venduruthy rail and road bridges, the first train to reach Kochi, the reclaiming of the Ernakulam foreshore, Bristow's own house and car, and the elephant Jawaharlal Nehru gifted to Russian children being loaded aboard ship. Alongside the pictures are maritime clocks, mechanical calculators, steering units and tools once used for underwater searches.
