The story

Christ Church is in central Salem, on Fort Road close to the District Collectorate, and holds services in English and Tamil. It was designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, a pioneer of Indo-Saracenic architecture whose work includes the Senate House of the University of Madras. A committee formed in 1866 raised money for a Church of England building separate from the London Missionary Society's chapel. The foundation stone was laid on 16 September 1871 on land that Mrs Thomas Foulkes agreed to swap, and Bishop Frederick Gell of Madras consecrated the church on 26 October 1875, after work costing Rs 15,000.

The interior is 68 ft long, with a nave of 47 by 22 ft. Memorial gifts include the east window and reredos given by James Fischer and a round west window for E. F. Elliot. Buried in the cemetery are members of the Fischer family, zamindars in Salem district, and Charles Carpenter, a brother-in-law of Sir Walter Scott.
