Kurumbapatti Zoological Park lies 10 km out of Salem at the foot of the Shervaroyan Hills, within the Kurumbapatty reserve forest, and is described as the second-largest zoo in Tamil Nadu after Arignar Anna Zoological Park. Its beginnings go back to a small museum set up in 1981, later enlarged. The ground is gently sloping, with bamboo, woodland and streams that flow for part of the year, and the nearby forest lets visitors see wild plants and animals too.
Monkeys are the main draw, and the collection includes spotted and sambar deer, blackbuck, bison, white peacocks, pelicans, marsh crocodiles, star tortoises and several parakeet species in purpose-built enclosures. In 2019 a butterfly garden with beehives was opened and 3D animal artworks were painted along the paths. The zoo also rescues injured wild animals, treating them and releasing them back into the wild, and there is a children's playground.
