The story

Azhavaimalai, also spelt Alavaimalai, is a rocky hill of the Eastern Ghats in Vennandur block, Namakkal district. It stands among a ring of settlements, with Vennandur to the west, Athanur to the north, Vaiyappamalai to the south and the larger town of Rasipuram to the east. The name is thought to mean 'deep-rooted hill', and geologically it rests on ancient crystalline and metamorphic rock cut through by later igneous intrusions.

Halfway up the hill is the Subrayar Murugan Temple, whose entrance faces west, and the Karupannar Temple lies close by. Its rocky slopes are thought to carry only sparse vegetation.
