The story

Chopani Mando lies on the bank of the Belan River in Prayagraj district, Uttar Pradesh, about 77 km from Prayagraj. Spread over 1,500 square metres, it was excavated by G. R. Sharma in 1967 and 1977, and is significant as a record of the change from a food-gathering to a food-producing society.

Archaeologists assign the site three phases of occupation: Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. Digging uncovered circular and oval settlements with hearths, hand-made cord-impressed pottery, microliths and chalcedony. Remains of pottery and rice have been dated to 7000–6000 BCE.
