The story

Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary lies near Narendrapur, south of Kolkata. Once a private mango garden of large old trees known as Kayaler Bagan, it was given sanctuary status in 1982, and the West Bengal government later acquired it to open it to the public. It was named Narendrapur Wildlife Sanctuary in September 2004 and renamed in October 2005 after the sculptor Chintamoni Kar, who had campaigned for years for its protection.

The sanctuary is known for its birds, butterflies, ferns and orchids. Commonly seen birds include drongos, Asian koels, brown fish owls, shikras, stork-billed and white-throated kingfishers, several woodpeckers, Indian paradise flycatchers, black-hooded orioles and orange-headed thrushes; butterflies include the common Jezebel, peacock pansy and blue tiger, and about twenty kinds of spider are commonly recorded. Narendrapur station is on the Sealdah–Sonarpur suburban line, 15 km from Sealdah, and roads connect the area with Garia and the EM Bypass.
