The story

Char Chinar, also called Ropa Lank or Roph Lank (Silver Island), is an island on the Lakut Dal, the smaller basin of Dal Lake in Srinagar. Its name, 'four chinars', comes from the chinar trees growing at each of its corners. Murad Baksh, Aurangzeb's brother, built the island. A second chinar island, Sone Lank (Gold Island), lies on the Bod Dal and looks towards the Hazratbal shrine.

The chinar, a long-lived plane tree, is part of Kashmiri tradition and found in nearly every village. Three of the island's four trees have shown signs of drying, blamed variously on building work, floods and climate change, and the state floriculture department has planted new chinars as part of efforts to restore the island.
