01 — The story

The story

Burhi Gosani Devalaya is a Shakta temple on Dewal Road in Jorhat, Assam. It began as a place to worship Burhi, an ancient primordial deity, who was later identified with the goddess Durga.

The temple's idol was brought from the Jaintia hills of Meghalaya into the Ahom kingdom by the Ahom king Rudra Singha. When a later king, Gaurinath Singha, moved the capital from Rangpur to Jorhat, he founded the Burhi Gosani Devalaya there in 1794. Durga Puja is the main event of the temple's year.
