The story

Brajeshwari Devi Temple is a Hindu shrine in Nagarkot, the old town of Kangra, near Kangra Fort and about 11 km from Kangra railway station. It is a Shakti Peeth: in the story of Sati, whose body Vishnu cut into 51 pieces to halt Shiva's dance of destruction, her left breast is believed to have fallen here. Another legend credits the Pandavas with the first temple, raised after Durga came to them in a dream.

Its store of gold and silver made it a target for raiders, and Mahmud of Ghazni looted it at least five times. An earthquake in 1905 left the complex in ruins, and it was rebuilt by 1920. It is open from 6 am to 8 pm, with a half-hour break at noon.
