The story

The Borsad Stepwell stands in Borsad town in Anand district, Gujarat, and is a Monument of National Importance protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. Vasu Soma and his family had it built in 1497. The well goes down through seven storeys and has 13 arches, with a flight of steps leading to the water.

A Sanskrit inscription in the stepwell is dated to a Sunday, the 13th day of the dark half of Shravana in Samvat 1553. It traces the builder's family, residents of Stambhatirtha of the Lalata community, through several generations of the Vasa line, and names the architect as Varade.
