Bodyguard Muneeswarar Temple, also written Muniswaran, is a small temple to Lord Muneeswarar in Chennai, about one and a half kilometres from the Central Railway Station. In 1919 labourers from North Arcot district carried the idol to the city, then Madras, and set it under a neem tree beside the British military barracks.
A British commander objected and, the same day, met with an accident, after which he let it stay. Devotees later built a temple around the idol. They believe the deity protects them from accidents, which is how he got the name Bodyguard Muneeswarar, and thousands now come each day.
