The story

The Black Diamond Museum and Library, also called the Black Diamond Complex, is a digital museum and library in central Angul, Odisha, on NH 55, the Cuttack–Sambalpur highway. Its subject is coal: the history, technology and heritage of mining in the Talcher coalfields and the wider Angul region, which is sometimes called the City of Black Diamond after a common nickname for coal.

Announced by the district administration in late 2020, the three-storey building was paid for by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited with a budget of ₹25 crore and opened on 1 January 2024. Its technology-driven exhibits explain how coal forms, how it is mined and how extraction developed in Talcher. The complex also has a library and an auditorium, each with its own fee, and is open from 9 am to 5 pm every day except Thursday. Children under seven and local people displaced by mining projects get in free.
