01 — The story

The story

Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary covers a stretch of the Mahanadi River and the hills around it. Its habitats range from dense forest and grassland to river, wetland and rocky cliff, and it works as a corridor for animals moving between areas. Endangered animals sheltering here include the gharial, the Asian elephant and the Royal Bengal tiger.

Sal, teak, bamboo and medicinal plants make up much of the forest, where leopards, sloth bears, wild boar and sambar live. Hornbills, kingfishers and herons keep to the riverbanks and wetlands, and crocodiles, turtles and snakes are common along the Mahanadi.
