The story

Biharinath, at 451 metres, is the tallest hill in Bankura district, West Bengal, and one of the district's densely forested areas. It lies about 60 km north-west of Bankura town and 8 km north-east of Saltora village, and is described as part of the Eastern Ghats. Finds of Palaeolithic tools here have drawn the attention of archaeologists to the hill and its surroundings.

The foot of the hill draws many tourists; here a small lake of about half a hectare is used for angling, and an old Shiva temple of Biharinath stands nearby. The area combines hills, thick forest, a spring, other water bodies and the Damodar River. Susunia hill, Joychandi Pahar, Garh Panchkot, Baranti and the Panchet and Maithon dams all lie a short distance away, and the West Bengal government has taken up a large tourism project for the area.
