The story

Bhirrana, also spelt Bhirdana, is an archaeological site at a small village in Fatehabad district, Haryana, about 14 kilometres north-east of the district town on the Bhuna road and around 220 kilometres north-west of Delhi. It is one of many settlements along old channels of the seasonal Ghaggar river.

The lowest layers produced Hakra Ware pottery, smelted copper and charcoal samples, two of them dated to the 8th–7th millennium BCE, which would place its beginnings before the Indus Valley civilisation, and about six others to 3200–2600 BCE. These dates are contested. Gregory Possehl, a leading Indus scholar, doubted claims drawn from them, and critics have questioned the excavation's methods and its link to efforts to equate Harappans with the Vedic Saraswati. The mound itself measures about 190 by 240 metres and rises 5.5 metres above the flat surrounding plain.
