01 — The story

The story

St. Thomas Church stands beside National Highway 10 in Hisar and is named after St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles. Work on it ran from December 1860 to May 1864 at a cost of Rs 4,500, and George Edward Lynch Cotton, Bishop of Calcutta, consecrated it on 31 December 1865. The Victorian interior has a wood-panelled ceiling, a floor of geometric tiles, an altar, a baptistry, a pulpit and two vestries, and the hall seats around 40. Its bell was made in Roorkee in 1874.

A graveyard near the entrance holds the graves of John Wedderburn, collector of Hisar, and his family, who died in the 1857 uprising. Krantiman Park, beside the church, is the oldest park in Hisar and was laid out by the East India Company as its Company Bagh.
