01 — The story

The story

Bab-i-Faiz Gate served as an entry point into the old town of Panipat, a city remembered for three battles that changed the course of Indian history. An Urdu inscription above its pointed arch names it "Bab-i-Faiz Nawab Sadiq" along with the figure 1129, and this lettering has survived. The design follows the Indo-Islamic manner of the 18th century, with a crenellated parapet along the top; the balconies that once projected from it are now mostly gone.

The gate now sits close to the Panipat bus stand, hemmed in by houses and shops in a busy trading district. A neighbouring quarter that was once residential has become a wholesale market for textiles, the trade Panipat is known for. The structure is protected by the Government of India.
