The story

Bhainsrorgarh Wildlife Sanctuary lies in Chittorgarh district at the point where the Bamani river flows into the Chambal. It was notified as a sanctuary in 1983 and spreads over forested hills and river valleys close to Bhainsrorgarh Fort, an 18th-century stronghold of Rawat Lal Singh whose palace is now run as a heritage hotel.

Birds are the main draw: more than 200 resident and migrant species have been recorded, among them painted storks and paradise flycatchers, and waterholes are good places to watch them come in to drink. Langurs and other mammals live in the woods, and visitors can join safaris, guided nature walks and conservation programmes run with local communities. The village of Menal, with its old temples, is about 90 km away on the Chittor-Bundi road. Winter, from October to March, is the best season; trails get slippery in the July-September rains.
