Bhaba Pass, also spelt Bhawa, crosses the Himalaya at 4,890 metres on the border of Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts, bordering both the Rupi-Bhaba Wildlife Sanctuary and Pin Valley National Park. It links two very different landscapes: Kinnaur's green, fertile Bhaba valley and the high, barren Pin valley in Spiti.
The trek starts from Katgaon and Kafnu, reached by a narrow road that leaves NH-22 and the Sutlej at Wangtu. From there a moderate climb follows the glacier-fed Bhaba river up to the pass before dropping into Spiti, where Mud is the first village; the crossing as a whole is a challenging one. Another route runs west from the pass towards the Parvati Valley in Kullu. In 2022 the state approved a 72 km road from Kafnu to Mud, and a tunnel under the pass is planned.
