Bavikonda is a Buddhist monastic site on a hilltop about 16 km north of central Visakhapatnam. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, it was a centre of Buddhist study and meditation that housed more than 2,000 monks at its height. The name means 'hill of wells', after the many wells that stored rainwater for the community.
The remains include stupas, chaityas, meditation halls and assembly halls built of brick and stone, some with carved decoration. A museum on site displays pottery, coins and relics recovered during excavation, and its upkeep has the backing of INTACH, the national heritage trust. Trails through the surrounding hills climb to the summit.
