The story

Basgo Monastery, or Bazgo Gompa, sits on a hill above the ruins of the old town of Basgo, on the bank of the Indus in Leh district, 40 km from Leh and some 5 km west of Nimoo. Basgo was a political and cultural centre in early Ladakh and appears often in the Ladakhi Chronicles; a palace was built here in the 15th century, and the monastery followed in 1680 for the Namgyal rulers.

The complex has three temples, the Chamchung, Chamba Lakhang and Serzang, all dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha. It is known for its Buddha statue and its murals.
