The story

The Bahuchar Mata Temple at Becharaji, in Mehsana district, is dedicated to Bahuchara Mata, a goddess linked with fertility and chastity who, in legend, was born into a Charan family. It is an important pilgrimage site, especially for hijras, believed to enjoy the goddess's protection, and for those seeking blessings for children and protection. Devotees of every background come here, and the temple is seen as a place that offers hijras belonging and acceptance.

The complex has three main shrines: the Adyasthan, or original site, the Madhyasthan, or middle temple, and the main temple housing the goddess. Carvings across the complex show legends of Bahuchara Mata. Pilgrims arrive all year, but Navaratri, the nine-night festival of the goddess, is the busiest time, drawing thousands for rituals, dance and offerings.
