The story

Badri Narayanan Temple is a Hindu temple at the entrance to Alagar Koil in Madurai district, modelled on the Badrinath temple in Uttarakhand. Its main image shows Vishnu seated in meditation, flanked by Nara and Narayana, and a large date tree grows behind the shrine. An image of Adi Shankaracharya stands beside the temple, and other images include Lakshmi, Garuda, Anjaneya and Ganesha.

The temple has a part in the Chittirai festival, when Kallalagar is said to visit it. He sets out from Alagar Koil, passing the Badri Narayanan shrine, and travels to Vandiyur by the Vaigai on Madurai's eastern edge; finding he has come too late for his sister's wedding, he is believed to refuse to cross the river and to go back disappointed. Daily pujas and monthly bhajans are held here.
