Aruvikkara Dam stands across the Karamana River at Aruvikkara in Thiruvananthapuram district. Planned in the 1930s and finished in 1972, the gravity masonry dam is 14.01 m high and 83.21 m long. It provides piped drinking water to Thiruvananthapuram and serves the area's irrigation, a task supported since 1983 by the Peppara dam. The Trivandrum Water Works, founded in 1933 and named after the Viceroy Lord Willingdon, has drawn water from the Karamana ever since.
Water from the reservoir is treated and pumped up to the city's observatory tank, and a bottling plant on the shore now packages it for sale. The dam site doubles as a picnic spot, and the reservoir is counted among Kerala's water tourism sites.
