Ananthagiri Hills, about 5 km from Vikarabad and some 75 km from Hyderabad, hold one of Telangana's dense forests, with teak among the trees. The Musi River, which flows through Hyderabad, rises here and runs east for about 240 km to join the Krishna; the hills also feed the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs. Ancient caves, medieval fort remains and old temples show how long people have lived in the area.
The hills take their name from the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple, where Vishnu is worshipped as Anantha Padmanabha; a state-run hotel stands nearby. Two trekking trails lead into the forest, one starting at the temple and the other about half a kilometre away towards Kerelli. The Nagasamudram, or Kotepally, reservoir lies about 20 km away.
