Zangla Palace stands in the village of Zangla in Zanskar, Kargil district, Ladakh, in what was once the Zangla kingdom. It is sometimes wrongly called Zangla Monastery: the error probably began with Tivadar Duka, who wrote Csoma's biography, and was repeated by the Indologist Ervin Baktay, who visited in 1928 and, sick with malaria, described the palace as a monastery, probably because of its shrine and resident monks. The village today has a nunnery but no monastery.
In 1823 the Hungarian scholar Sándor Kőrösi Csoma was living at the palace while editing the first Tibetan-English dictionary, published in 1824. Six kilometres to the south, in the village of Tsa-zar, the small Tsazar Monastery has a few lamas and some notable wall paintings.
