The story

The Indian Army built this memorial at Dras, about 60 km from Kargil, to honour the soldiers who died in the 1999 war between India and Pakistan. Tololing Peak rises behind it, and Tiger Hill can be seen from the grounds. Pink sandstone walls enclose a sculpture of soldiers raising the national flag, a wall listing the names of the fallen, and rows of tombstones. A poem by Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan for those killed in Operation Vijay stands at the entrance.

The museum gallery is named after Captain Manoj Pandey, who received the Param Vir Chakra for his leadership in the conflict. It shows soldiers' original letters, photographs, weapons and equipment, and screens a documentary on the fighting. Kargil Vijay Diwas is marked here each year on 26 July, and a small shop sells souvenirs.
