01 — The story

The story

Tiger Hill is a strategic peak in Kargil that saw some of the heaviest fighting of the 1999 Kargil War between Indian and Pakistani forces. Indian Army troops began their effort to recapture it from entrenched enemy positions on 20 May 1999, and after days of fierce combat the Indian flag was raised on the summit on 4 July 1999. Its capture is regarded as a turning point in the war.

Bunkers and memorials remain on the slopes in honour of the Indian soldiers who fought and died there. The hill looks out over snow-covered peaks, valleys, meadows and rivers, and the villages around it keep Ladakhi customs, festivals with traditional music and dance, and local cooking.
