The story

The Mahathobhara Yelluru Shree Vishweshwara Temple in Yellur village, Udupi district, is dedicated to Shiva as Vishweshwara. The deity is mentioned in at least 12 rock edicts, and the temple serves a group of surrounding villages including Kalathuru, Padooru, Belapu and Kunjoor. Its history is said to go back over 1,000 years, and it was reopened after renovation in festivities held from 4 to 12 March 2009.

Legend says the god came from Kashi to Yelluru, pleased by the penance of a devotee of the Kunda Hegde family, and the shrine is regarded as self-manifested. The saint Vadiraja Tirtha wrote of finding it closed after the day's puja; Shiva opened the door to him, and when Nandi blocked the view, Vadiraja prayed until Nandi sat down. Devotees offer tender-coconut abhisheka, oil lamps and gold coins.
